Fall is my favorite time of the year! The beautiful colors, the wonderful food, chilly nights by the fire, spiced wine, and, yes…the cute outfits and pumpkin lattes. One of my favorite desserts to make in the fall is the all-American apple pie. It’s so easy and full of flavor and fall is the best time to get apples in season here in the Midwest. Every year my husband’s family goes apple picking at The Apple Barn in Wisconsin. They have many varieties of apples and they also have a beautiful country store and winery (another reason we like to go). My husband has been going to The Apple Barn since he was a kid, and this year we continued that tradition with our little Grace. We always have fun (even though Grace slept the entire time we were there) and we enjoyed spending a beautiful fall day outside with the fam.
So my first recipe I am sharing with you is a fall favorite of mine. I grew up eating homemade apple pie and I absolutely love making apple pie when the apples are in season. I love how the sugars and butter melt together to make a soft glaze over the apples! YUMM! For my pie I purchased a mix of bruised apples from The Farm, a local produce stand, and some I got while picking in Wisconsin. The simple recipe, listed below, is a small twist to what my mom makes every year… it’s so easy!
Time: 1 hour
Serving: 1 Apple Pie
Pie Filling:
- 7-8 Apples
- 3 tbsp flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 generous tsp cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 2 tbsp butter
- Crust*
Grab your apples and peel them! Cut them into small wedges. And toss with the flour, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla in a bowl.
Next, add the whole mixture into pie pan with the pie crust, I just place slices of the butter on top, then add your top layer of the crust! Place a piece of foil under the pie just incase the glaze leaks out. Bake an hour on 350, until the apples are soft and you can easily stick a fork through them.
See how easy it is!!! Enjoy!
